ORIGIN OF THE NAME: EXCELL

A stagecoach used to run between Hopkinsville and Clarksville with a stop at the intersection of Hwy 12 and Robin Hill Road. This stop had a spring for the horses and passengers to refresh.

The stop was marked with an “X” and an “L”. In Roman Numerals, XL means 40. It was 40 miles from the stop to Nashville.

Eventually, the name was rewritten as an actual word: Excell. The area around the stop became known as the Excell Area.
