DEFINING THE SANGO BOUNDARIES

By using the 1877 Map of Montgomery County, Tennessee compiled by D. G. Beers & Co. (above), we can see actual evidence of the Sango story. The George halliburton land and store is identified as well as land that he dedicated to Sango Cemetery and Bethel Church.

Clarksville/Turnersville Road and the norther extension of McAdoo Creek can be seen as the predecessors of Sango Road and Sango Drive. Also of note is the appearance of Telegraph Road, which would latter be Trough Springs Road, and Port Royal Road. Sango, Trough Springs and Port Royal Roads connected with what would later become Woodson Road.According to the 1932 General Road Map of Montgomery County, Tennessee created by the County Engineer, communities in the area are beginning to be officially identified. Sango, Woodford, Ross View, Excell, and Port Royal are among these. Sango is prominently written around the original “Halliburton Crossroads.”

In moder time, mention of these communities is not always a given. Sometimes the names are modified or have even completely disappeared.

When speaking with long time residents, there is a very deeply engrained idea as to the boundaries of the present day Sango with or without the aid of a map. It is not unusual to hear opinions about whether south of 41-A or Walmart or even Exit 11 I-24 are even to be included.

Yet based on research so far, the historical record indicates prominent family names connected with the Sango past are very spread out throughout the area. This is a testament to the original farming families with sprawling farms and plantations.

For the purposes of the “Searching for Sango” project, we will define Sango geographically as the following:

As far North as the Red River, to the East as far as Bradbury Road, to the South as far as 41-A/McAdoo Creek, and to the West as far as Richview Road/Memorial Ext./Highway 76.

We acknowledge wholeheartedly that the heart of Sango will always be at the old “Halliburton Crossroad.” Yet, in respect of the small community of the past, we choose to celebrate the more modern idea that Sango is an expanded place and idea that many, many more people call home.
