NEVELS CHAPEL MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH
Many have heard about land being “taken” for government purposes. This undesirable scenario seems to have happened at least twice for Nevels Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
Land for the church was donated in 1878. The original location was located near the current McDonald’s on Highway 76. In 1946, the original church was razed and a new church built. However, in 1971, the Highway Department took the portion of land where the original church was.
In 1972, new land was purchased at the current Memorial Ext. location. In 1973, a portion of the new land was taken by the Highway Department again. In 1974, construction on the current building finally began.
The original Nevels Chapel Missionary Baptist Church cemetary remains in its original location. A single monument surrounded by a fenced in area marks part of the remaining cemetery.
